Monstera Deliciosa Thai Constellation - The Ultimate Collector's Monstera
If there's one plant that has captured the hearts of collectors worldwide, it's the Monstera Thai Constellation. Those stunning cream and green marbled leaves, splashed with patterns that resemble stars scattered across a galaxy, have made this one of the most sought-after houseplants in the world. And now, thanks to tissue culture production, this once impossibly rare plant is finally within reach.
Developed through tissue culture in Thailand (hence the name), the Thai Constellation is a variegated cultivar of the beloved Monstera deliciosa. What makes it special isn't just its beauty, but the fact that its variegation is genetically stable. Unlike the Monstera Albo, which can revert to all-green leaves, the Thai Constellation's cream marbling is locked in. Every new leaf will display that gorgeous constellation pattern, giving you consistency and peace of mind.
Each leaf is genuinely unique. Some will have heavy cream sectors, others delicate speckles and freckles, and many will show a beautiful mix of both. As the plant matures, you'll see the characteristic Monstera fenestrations (those famous holes and splits) develop, making each new leaf an exciting event.
Light Requirements
Thai Constellation needs more light than its all-green cousin. The cream variegated sections contain little to no chlorophyll, so the green portions have to work harder to produce energy for the plant. Bright indirect light is essential for healthy growth and maintaining vibrant variegation.
A position near an east-facing window is ideal, where the plant can receive gentle morning light. Some direct early morning or late afternoon sun is generally fine, but avoid harsh midday and afternoon sun, especially in summer. The cream sections are particularly prone to sunburn, which shows as brown, crispy patches.
If your Thai Constellation is growing slowly or producing smaller leaves, it likely needs more light. If leaves are burning or looking washed out, reduce light exposure.
Watering
Thai Constellation is less forgiving than standard Monstera when it comes to watering. It doesn't tolerate drying out completely and is more susceptible to root rot if overwatered. The balance is key.
Allow the top 20-30% of the soil to dry before watering thoroughly. Check the soil regularly rather than watering on a schedule. When you do water, ensure excess drains away completely. Never let the pot sit in water.
Use filtered or rainwater if possible, as Thai Constellation can be sensitive to chemicals in tap water. Room temperature water is best.
Humidity and Temperature
Coming from tropical origins, Thai Constellation appreciates higher humidity levels of 60-70%. While it can adapt to average household humidity, the leaves will be healthier and less prone to brown edges with increased moisture in the air.
If you've just received a tissue-cultured plant, maintaining higher humidity for the first few weeks is especially important while it acclimates to your home.
Keep temperatures between 18-27°C for best growth. Avoid temperatures below 15°C and protect from cold draughts, air conditioning vents, and cold windows. Temperature fluctuations can stress the plant.
Potting Medium
A chunky, fast-draining aroid mix is essential. Thai Constellation is more prone to root rot than standard Monstera, so good drainage and aeration are critical. A mix containing orchid bark, perlite, and coco coir works well.
Our Ultimate Aroid Mix is ideal for Thai Constellation, providing the perfect balance of drainage, aeration, and moisture retention.
Feeding Your Thai Constellation
Thai Constellation is a slower grower and therefore a lighter feeder than standard Monstera. Feed with Growth Technology Foliage Focus at 3-5ml per litre at every watering for optimum results. Use Growth Technology Rootzone at 1ml per litre every 2-4 weeks to support healthy root development.
Because variegated plants are slower growing, they're more sensitive to fertiliser burn. If in doubt, dilute more rather than less. A "weakly weekly" approach works well.
Support and Growth
Like all Monstera, Thai Constellation is a natural climber. In the wild, it uses aerial roots to climb trees, and providing support encourages larger leaves with more impressive fenestrations.
A Grow Vertical Propstick filled with sphagnum moss or tree fern fibre gives the aerial roots something to grip and grow into. As the plant climbs, you'll be rewarded with increasingly impressive foliage.
Perfect For
- Serious plant collectors
- Those wanting a statement indoor plant
- Bright living rooms and well-lit spaces
- Plant enthusiasts ready for a rewarding challenge
- Anyone who loves unique, one-of-a-kind foliage
Frequently Asked Questions
Will my Thai Constellation revert to green?
No. Unlike the Monstera Albo, Thai Constellation has stable variegation that is genetically fixed. Every new leaf will display the cream constellation pattern. The amount and distribution of variegation may vary leaf to leaf, but it won't revert to all green.
Why is my Thai Constellation growing slowly?
Thai Constellation naturally grows slower than standard Monstera because the variegated sections don't produce as much energy. This is completely normal. However, if growth seems particularly slow, check your light levels. These plants need more light than their all-green counterparts.
Why are the cream sections turning brown?
The cream variegated sections are more delicate than the green parts. Brown patches can be caused by direct sun exposure (sunburn), low humidity, inconsistent watering, or cold damage. The cream sections are essentially the plant's weak points and need a bit more protection.
When will my plant develop fenestrations?
Fenestrations (the iconic holes and splits) develop as the plant matures. Young tissue-cultured plants produce juvenile leaves without fenestrations first. With proper care, climbing support, and adequate light, fenestrations will develop over time as leaves get larger. Patience is key!
Please Keep in Mind
Every Thai Constellation leaf is unique. The variegation pattern, distribution of cream and green, and intensity of marbling will vary between leaves and between plants. This natural variation is part of what makes each plant special.
Young tissue-cultured plants will produce smaller, juvenile leaves initially. With proper care and climbing support, leaf size and fenestration will increase over time.
Monstera Thai Constellation is toxic to pets and humans if ingested. Keep out of reach of curious pets and children.

Shipping & Greenhouse Collection
Let's Talk About How Your Plants Get to You!
Alright, so here's the deal with shipping - we try our best to send all our plants potted and ready to go, but sometimes due to larger orders or when we're moving through some big changes, we'll send some plants semi-bare rooted. If you haven't come across this before, it basically means we carefully remove a bunch of the soil before packing them up. I know that might sound a bit scary if you've never ordered plants online before, but trust me, this is actually a really smart way to do it! The main reason we do this is because it creates so much more room in the box, which means we can fit way more plants in one shipment for you. More plants in one box = more green goodness arriving at your door at once! The plants honestly handle the journey better without all that heavy, wet soil sloshing around too. Just make sure you've got some fresh potting mix ready to go when your green babies arrive, because they'll want to get tucked into their new home pretty quickly!
Now, let's chat about what actually fits in our boxes. We can safely fit about 4-6 plants in one box, or if you're stocking up on supplies, one box can hold 3 bags of medium plus 1L of Growth Technology. We really don't recommend adding heavy items with your plants though - it just puts extra stress on your precious plants during transit and limits how many we can fit. If your order ends up being heavier than our standard box can handle, we'll reach out to you about additional postage fees. We're always transparent about costs, no sneaky surprises!
When Does Everything Ship Out?
Here's how our timeline works - we process and ship orders the week after you place them. So if you order on a Tuesday, your plants will get packed and sent out sometime the following week. We ship Monday through Friday (because let's be real, we all need weekends to recharge!), and we're aiming to get your order out within 4-6 business days of processing. Sometimes things take a tiny bit longer because we're a small but mighty team, and we take absolute care in making sure every single plant is packed perfectly. Like, we're talking individual attention for each plant here. We don't rush this stuff!
Once your order ships, you'll get an email with your tracking number. If you haven't received that tracking email, it just means we're still working on your order - it hasn't left us yet. Please be patient with us! We promise we're working as fast as we can while still making sure everything is done right. We pack orders in chronological order to keep things fair for everyone, so no one's getting special treatment or jumping the queue. First come, first served, that's how we roll!
The Journey to Your Doorstep
All our orders ship with Australia Post, and here's something cool - they operate 24/7! That means even if your order gets sent out on a Friday afternoon, it's still making its way to you over the weekend. The postal system doesn't sleep, and honestly, that's pretty amazing for getting plants to you quickly. You can generally expect your plants to arrive within 2-7 days after we ship them, depending on where you are in Australia. Metro areas tend to be quicker, regional spots might take the full week, but either way, your tracking number will keep you in the loop the whole time.
And here's the thing that always blows people's minds - our plants are absolute troopers. We've tested this extensively, and they can genuinely survive in their boxes for up to three weeks if needed. Obviously we don't want them sitting around that long, but life happens, mail gets delayed sometimes, and we want you to know that your plants are prepped and ready to handle whatever the postal system throws at them. While we do our best to avoid delays, occasional unforeseen circumstances may slightly impact delivery times, but rest assured, your plants are packed with extra care and are tougher than you think!
Quarantine States (WA, NT, TAS)
We currently only ship directly to non-quarantine states. Unfortunately, biosecurity restrictions make it pretty complicated to send plants to Western Australia, Northern Territory, and Tasmania. But don't worry, we've got a solution for you! If you're from a quarantine restricted state and would like to purchase plants from us, we recommend using Paradise Distributors' concierge service. They're absolute legends and can handle all the biosecurity paperwork and requirements for you. Make sure to contact them prior to purchasing so they can give you all the details and help you out: info@rareplants.net.au
Come Visit the Greenhouse! (Rockdale)
If you're local or just love the idea of picking up your order in person, we've got you covered! Greenhouse collection from our Rockdale location is available the same week you make your purchase. Our opening hours are always changing, so make sure to check booking availability on our 'Visit the Greenhouse' page before purchasing. After you've paid for your order, just head over and book a time slot that works for you. You'll get to pick up your plants AND have a wander through the greenhouse while you're here, which honestly is such a vibe. Just please wear a mask if you're feeling unwell - it's a small space and we want to keep everyone safe and healthy!
Catch Us at Markets!
We do regular markets around Sydney and would love to meet you in person! If you'd prefer to skip shipping altogether and grab your order at one of our market stalls, just email us at info@growinggroundsaustralia.com and we can arrange collection at an upcoming market. It's a great way to chat plants face-to-face, see what else we've got on the day, and save on postage!
