Tillandsia Caput-Medusae - The Legendary Medusa's Head
The Tillandsia Caput-Medusae is one of those plants that stops people in their tracks. Named after the legendary Greek monster Medusa whose hair was made of serpents, this striking air plant features thick, snake-like leaves that twist and curl from a distinctive bulbous base. Don't worry though, unlike its mythological namesake, gazing at this plant won't turn you to stone. It might, however, turn you into an air plant collector!
Native to Central America and Mexico, from Costa Rica through to Guatemala and beyond, Caput-Medusae grows as an epiphyte clinging to tree branches in areas of strong sunlight. In the wild, it even provides shelter for certain ant species in return for nutrients, a fascinating relationship called myrmecophily. Fortunately, ants aren't required in cultivation!
The silvery-green leaves are covered in fuzzy trichomes (tiny scales that absorb moisture and nutrients from the air), giving the plant a soft, almost velvety appearance. The thick, fleshy leaves curl into sinuous forms that truly do resemble Medusa's serpentine locks. It's sculptural, dramatic, and utterly captivating.
Light Requirements
Caput-Medusae is classified as a xeric air plant, meaning it originates from drier, more exposed environments and can handle more light than many Tillandsia varieties. In its native habitat, it grows in treetops where it receives strong sunlight.
Provide bright indirect light for best results. Position near east or west-facing windows, or in a spot that receives good ambient natural light throughout the day. It can tolerate some direct morning or late afternoon sun without issue, though intense midday rays should be avoided.
If your plant looks stretched or spindly, it's telling you it needs more light. Good light also encourages blooming, so if you want to see those spectacular flowers, give your Medusa plenty of brightness!
Watering - Important!
The bulbous base that makes Caput-Medusae so distinctive is also its Achilles heel when it comes to watering. Water can easily become trapped in the crevices between leaves at the base, leading to rot if the plant doesn't dry properly.
Two approaches work well. Misting involves thoroughly spraying the plant 2-3 times per week, focusing on the leaf tips rather than the base. Brief soaking involves submerging for just 10-15 minutes once weekly (shorter than many air plants require).
After any watering, the most important step is drying. Turn your plant upside down and give it a gentle shake to dislodge any water trapped in the base. Then place it somewhere with excellent airflow where it can dry completely within 3-4 hours. This step is crucial for preventing rot!
A handy indicator: when your Caput-Medusae is thirsty, its leaves will curl more tightly. Once watered, they'll relax and open up. It's like having a built-in moisture meter!
Air Circulation
Good airflow is absolutely essential for this species, particularly given its tendency to trap water in its bulbous base. In nature, it grows on exposed branches where breezes constantly move around it.
Display in open containers, mounted on wood or cork, or in any arrangement that allows air to circulate freely around the entire plant. Avoid enclosed terrariums or stuffy corners. If you notice any soft or mushy areas developing at the base, inadequate airflow combined with moisture is likely the cause.
Temperature and Environment
Caput-Medusae thrives in temperatures between 18-30°C but can tolerate a range from 10-32°C. Keep above 5°C minimum and protect from frost. It's quite adaptable to typical Australian household conditions.
While it appreciates some humidity, being a xeric species means it's more tolerant of drier air than many tropical plants. In air-conditioned or heated environments, simply maintain your misting routine and ensure good airflow.
No Soil Required
Like all Tillandsias, Caput-Medusae is an epiphyte that absorbs water and nutrients through its leaves rather than roots. Any roots produced are purely for anchoring to surfaces. This opens up endless creative display possibilities!
One fascinating feature of this plant is that it's ageotropic, meaning it grows straight regardless of its orientation. You can mount it horizontally, vertically, or even upside down (creating a jellyfish effect!) and it will continue growing normally. How cool is that?
Popular display options include mounting on driftwood, cork bark, or decorative branches; placing in sea urchin shells for a jellyfish look; displaying in open terrariums or glass globes; nestling in wire frames or geometric holders; or simply sitting on shelves and desks where its sculptural form can be admired.
Feeding
While Caput-Medusae gets most of its nutrients from the air, occasional feeding encourages healthier growth and more reliable blooming. Use a diluted bromeliad or air plant fertiliser (or heavily diluted general liquid fertiliser) once monthly during the growing season.
Add fertiliser to your misting water for easy application. Remember, less is more with air plants. Over-fertilising can damage the plant.
The Spectacular Bloom
When mature Caput-Medusae blooms, it puts on an absolutely stunning show. As flowering approaches, the centre leaves develop a pale pink blush. Then, an inflorescence emerges with 2-6 erect spikes of blood-red or cherry-red bracts. From these, tubular violet or purple flowers appear, sometimes with hints of white. The display can last for several weeks!
Bright light and regular feeding can encourage flowering. After blooming, the mother plant will produce pups (offsets) at its base before gradually declining. These can be left attached to form impressive clumps, or separated when about one-third the size of the parent to start new plants.
Why Collectors Love This Plant
Caput-Medusae offers something truly unique in the plant world. Its otherworldly appearance, sculptural form, and dramatic blooms make it a conversation piece in any collection. Add in its hardiness and easy care requirements, and you have a plant that's both visually striking and beginner-friendly.
The fact that it can be displayed in any orientation opens up creative possibilities that few other plants offer. Hang it upside down as a living jellyfish, mount it on driftwood as a sea creature, or display it traditionally. It always looks spectacular!

Frequently Asked Questions
Why are the leaves curling so tightly?
Tight curling indicates your plant is thirsty. Give it a good misting or brief soak, ensure it dries properly, and the leaves should relax within a day or so.
Can I display my Caput-Medusae upside down?
Yes! This species is ageotropic, meaning it grows straight regardless of orientation. Displaying upside down creates a fantastic jellyfish effect. Just be extra careful with watering to ensure water doesn't pool in the base.
The base of my plant feels soft. What's wrong?
A soft, mushy base indicates rot, usually from water trapped in the bulbous area without proper drying. Prevention is key: keep soaks brief, shake off excess water, and ensure excellent airflow for quick drying.
Why is my Caput-Medusae sometimes called an Octopus Plant?
The curling, tentacle-like leaves resemble octopus arms, earning it this alternative nickname alongside Medusa's Head and Jellyfish Plant.
Please Keep in Mind
Every Tillandsia Caput-Medusae is unique! The degree of leaf curling, size, and exact coloration will vary between plants and will change depending on hydration levels and growing conditions. Some plants may have more pronounced bulbous bases than others. This natural variation is part of what makes each specimen special. The photos shown are representative examples of the quality and appearance you can expect.

Shipping & Greenhouse Collection
Let's Talk About How Your Plants Get to You!
Alright, so here's the deal with shipping - we try our best to send all our plants potted and ready to go, but sometimes due to larger orders or when we're moving through some big changes, we'll send some plants semi-bare rooted. If you haven't come across this before, it basically means we carefully remove a bunch of the soil before packing them up. I know that might sound a bit scary if you've never ordered plants online before, but trust me, this is actually a really smart way to do it! The main reason we do this is because it creates so much more room in the box, which means we can fit way more plants in one shipment for you. More plants in one box = more green goodness arriving at your door at once! The plants honestly handle the journey better without all that heavy, wet soil sloshing around too. Just make sure you've got some fresh potting mix ready to go when your green babies arrive, because they'll want to get tucked into their new home pretty quickly!
Now, let's chat about what actually fits in our boxes. We can safely fit about 4-6 plants in one box, or if you're stocking up on supplies, one box can hold 3 bags of medium plus 1L of Growth Technology. We really don't recommend adding heavy items with your plants though - it just puts extra stress on your precious plants during transit and limits how many we can fit. If your order ends up being heavier than our standard box can handle, we'll reach out to you about additional postage fees. We're always transparent about costs, no sneaky surprises!
When Does Everything Ship Out?
Here's how our timeline works - we process and ship orders the week after you place them. So if you order on a Tuesday, your plants will get packed and sent out sometime the following week. We ship Monday through Friday (because let's be real, we all need weekends to recharge!), and we're aiming to get your order out within 4-6 business days of processing. Sometimes things take a tiny bit longer because we're a small but mighty team, and we take absolute care in making sure every single plant is packed perfectly. Like, we're talking individual attention for each plant here. We don't rush this stuff!
Once your order ships, you'll get an email with your tracking number. If you haven't received that tracking email, it just means we're still working on your order - it hasn't left us yet. Please be patient with us! We promise we're working as fast as we can while still making sure everything is done right. We pack orders in chronological order to keep things fair for everyone, so no one's getting special treatment or jumping the queue. First come, first served, that's how we roll!
The Journey to Your Doorstep
All our orders ship with Australia Post, and here's something cool - they operate 24/7! That means even if your order gets sent out on a Friday afternoon, it's still making its way to you over the weekend. The postal system doesn't sleep, and honestly, that's pretty amazing for getting plants to you quickly. You can generally expect your plants to arrive within 2-7 days after we ship them, depending on where you are in Australia. Metro areas tend to be quicker, regional spots might take the full week, but either way, your tracking number will keep you in the loop the whole time.
And here's the thing that always blows people's minds - our plants are absolute troopers. We've tested this extensively, and they can genuinely survive in their boxes for up to three weeks if needed. Obviously we don't want them sitting around that long, but life happens, mail gets delayed sometimes, and we want you to know that your plants are prepped and ready to handle whatever the postal system throws at them. While we do our best to avoid delays, occasional unforeseen circumstances may slightly impact delivery times, but rest assured, your plants are packed with extra care and are tougher than you think!
Quarantine States (WA, NT, TAS)
We currently only ship directly to non-quarantine states. Unfortunately, biosecurity restrictions make it pretty complicated to send plants to Western Australia, Northern Territory, and Tasmania. But don't worry, we've got a solution for you! If you're from a quarantine restricted state and would like to purchase plants from us, we recommend using Paradise Distributors' concierge service. They're absolute legends and can handle all the biosecurity paperwork and requirements for you. Make sure to contact them prior to purchasing so they can give you all the details and help you out: info@rareplants.net.au
