Tillandsia Bulbosa - The Alien Air Plant
Meet Tillandsia Bulbosa, quite possibly the quirkiest Air Plant you'll ever own! With its distinctive bulbous base and wild, tentacle-like leaves that twist and curl in every direction, this fascinating plant looks like something from another planet. It's earned nicknames like "The Alien Plant" and "Twisty" for good reason, and once you see one in person, you'll understand why collectors can't resist them.
Native to the tropical forests of Central and South America, Tillandsia Bulbosa is a mesic (tropical) species that thrives in higher humidity conditions than many other Air Plants. This makes it one of the few Tillandsia species that can actually tolerate closed terrarium environments, opening up creative display possibilities that other Air Plants simply can't handle.
Why Choose Tillandsia Bulbosa?
- Totally Unique Appearance! Bulbous base with wild, curling tentacle-like leaves.
- Spectacular Flowers! Bright red bracts with striking purple tubular blooms.
- Terrarium Friendly! One of the few Air Plants that tolerates closed terrariums.
- Higher Humidity Tolerant! Perfect for bathrooms and humid spots.
- Compact Size! Stays small, perfect for creative displays.
- No Soil Needed! Display anywhere you like.
- Pet Safe! Non-toxic to cats, dogs and humans.
- Fascinating Natural History! A myrmecophyte that hosts ants in the wild.
The Bulbosa Look
Tillandsia Bulbosa is instantly recognisable by its swollen, bulbous base from which narrow, green leaves emerge and twist outward in an almost chaotic fashion. The leaves are typically 6-20cm long, curling and weaving like the tentacles of a sea creature or the arms of some alien life form. The overall effect is wonderfully sculptural and endlessly interesting to look at.
The plant's colouration is a lovely green, which can develop red, orange or even purple tones when the plant is preparing to bloom or when grown in bright light. Unlike many silvery Air Plants, Tillandsia Bulbosa lacks the dense covering of trichomes (the silvery scales that help absorb moisture), giving it a smoother, greener appearance.
Two popular cultivars exist: Tillandsia Bulbosa 'Guatemala' is the smaller, more compact form, while Tillandsia Bulbosa 'Belize' grows larger. Both share the same wonderful tentacle-like appearance and easy-care nature.
A Natural Ant Hotel
Here's a fascinating bit of natural history: Tillandsia Bulbosa is a myrmecophyte, which means it has evolved to live in symbiosis with ants in its native habitat. The hollow, bulbous base provides a perfect shelter for ant colonies, and in return, the ants provide nutrients through their waste and protect the plant from herbivores. Studies in Mexico found that over 50% of wild Tillandsia Bulbosa plants were occupied by ants!
Don't worry though, your cultivated plant won't come with any tiny tenants, and it will grow perfectly happily without them. It's just one more reason why these fascinating plants are so special.
The Spectacular Flower Display
When Tillandsia Bulbosa decides to bloom, it puts on quite a show! The plant produces a branched inflorescence with vivid red bracts, from which striking purple or violet tubular flowers emerge. The contrast between the red bracts and purple flowers against the green foliage is absolutely stunning.
Before flowering, the entire plant often takes on a reddish blush, particularly at the leaf tips, signalling that blooms are on the way. Like all Tillandsia, each plant blooms once in its lifetime, but the display is spectacular and well worth the wait.
Light Requirements
Tillandsia Bulbosa thrives in bright, indirect light to partial shade. In its natural habitat, it grows in the dappled light beneath forest canopies, so it prefers gentler light conditions than some of the more silvery, xeric Air Plants.
Indoors, an east or west-facing window works well, or a position near a bright window where direct sunlight is filtered. Avoid harsh direct sun, which can scorch the leaves. For outdoor growing, a shaded position under trees, on a covered verandah, or in a shadehouse provides ideal conditions.
Too much light will cause the leaves to brown or bleach, while too little will result in weak, etiolated growth. Finding that happy medium of bright, filtered light will keep your Bulbosa thriving.
Watering Your Air Plant
As a mesic (tropical) species, Tillandsia Bulbosa appreciates slightly more moisture than many other Air Plants. However, the key is still to allow the plant to dry out between waterings. Your approach depends on where your plant is positioned:
For Plants in Shade: Mist your Air Plant once a week during summer. In winter, reduce misting to once every two to three weeks. Shaded positions retain moisture longer, so less frequent watering is needed.
For Plants in Part Sun: Give your plant a quick drench for about 10 seconds under the tap or with a watering can. After drenching, shake the plant gently to remove excess water and ensure no water settles in the bulbous base, then return it to its spot.
Important: Always shake your Tillandsia Bulbosa after watering to remove excess water from the bulbous base. Standing water in the bulb is an invitation for rot. If your plant is in a terrarium, it may need little to no direct watering as it can absorb moisture from the humid environment.
Humidity and Temperature
This is where Tillandsia Bulbosa really shines compared to other Air Plants. As a tropical species, it actually enjoys higher humidity levels (50-70%) and can tolerate conditions that would cause other Tillandsia to rot. This makes it perfect for:
- Bathrooms where humidity is naturally higher
- Closed or semi-closed terrariums
- Vivariums and paludariums
- Kitchens near the sink
- Humid indoor environments
Temperature-wise, Tillandsia Bulbosa prefers warmth, thriving between 12-32°C. It cannot tolerate temperatures below about 10°C and should be protected from frost. In cooler climates, bring plants indoors during winter.
While it tolerates higher humidity than many Air Plants, good air circulation is still beneficial to prevent any issues. In closed terrariums, occasional opening for ventilation helps maintain plant health.
Terrarium Superstar
One of the most exciting things about Tillandsia Bulbosa is its suitability for terrarium growing. While most Air Plants quickly succumb to the high humidity and low airflow of closed terrariums, Bulbosa can actually thrive in these conditions with a careful approach.
For terrarium success:
- Choose well-ventilated tank-style terrariums over sealed jars
- Provide maximum space and airflow around the plant
- Attach to backgrounds or branches rather than sitting on substrate
- Indirect misting of the terrarium environment may provide sufficient moisture
- Monitor closely and adjust care as needed
The quirky, alien appearance of Tillandsia Bulbosa makes it a perfect focal point in terrarium designs, adding texture and interest that other plants simply can't match.
Feeding Your Air Plant
Air Plants benefit from occasional feeding during the growing season. Mist with a very diluted Bromeliad or Orchid fertiliser once a fortnight in warmer months and once a month through winter. Growth Technology Foliage Focus at a very diluted rate (1ml per litre) works well when applied as a foliar spray.
Don't overdo the fertilising as Air Plants are light feeders. A little goes a long way in encouraging healthy growth and that spectacular flower display!
Growth and Pupping
Tillandsia Bulbosa is a slow-growing species, but with patience it will reward you with pups (offsets) after flowering. These baby plants emerge from the base and can be left to form an impressive clump or separated once they reach about one-third the size of the parent.
A well-established clump of Tillandsia Bulbosa, with multiple plants of different ages growing together, creates a spectacular display that looks like a cluster of tiny aliens!
Display Ideas
The unique sculptural form of Tillandsia Bulbosa lends itself to creative displays:
- Terrariums and vivariums where its humidity tolerance shines
- Mount on driftwood or cork bark for a natural look
- Nestle into branch crevices as it would grow in the wild
- Display in shells or decorative holders
- Create living wall art or vertical gardens
- Bathroom windowsills where humidity is naturally higher
- Pair with other mesic Tillandsia like T. butzii or T. brachycaulos
The compact size (staying under 20cm for most plants) means Tillandsia Bulbosa fits easily into small spaces and creative arrangements.
Care Tips for Success
- Provide bright indirect light and avoid harsh direct sun.
- Water according to light levels with misting in shade, drenching in part sun.
- Always shake off excess water from the bulbous base.
- Embrace higher humidity as this species tolerates it well.
- Keep warm and protect from temperatures below 10°C.
- Feed lightly during the growing season.
- Consider terrarium growing for a unique display.
Common Questions
Can Tillandsia Bulbosa really grow in a closed terrarium? Yes! Unlike most Air Plants, this mesic species can tolerate the higher humidity of closed terrariums. Choose well-ventilated designs and monitor your plant closely.
Why is it called a myrmecophyte? In the wild, the hollow bulbous base provides shelter for ant colonies in a symbiotic relationship. Your cultivated plant won't have ants and grows perfectly well without them.
What's the difference between Guatemala and Belize forms? The Guatemala form is smaller and more compact, while the Belize form grows larger. Both have the same wonderful appearance and care requirements.
Why are the leaf tips turning brown? This usually indicates underwatering, very low humidity, or exposure to harsh direct sun. Adjust your care accordingly.
Pet Safety
Tillandsia Bulbosa is non-toxic to cats, dogs and humans, making it a wonderful choice for households with curious pets or children. Its soil-free nature also means no messy dirt for pets to dig in!

Shipping & Greenhouse Collection
Let's Talk About How Your Plants Get to You!
Alright, so here's the deal with shipping - we try our best to send all our plants potted and ready to go, but sometimes due to larger orders or when we're moving through some big changes, we'll send some plants semi-bare rooted. If you haven't come across this before, it basically means we carefully remove a bunch of the soil before packing them up. I know that might sound a bit scary if you've never ordered plants online before, but trust me, this is actually a really smart way to do it! The main reason we do this is because it creates so much more room in the box, which means we can fit way more plants in one shipment for you. More plants in one box = more green goodness arriving at your door at once! The plants honestly handle the journey better without all that heavy, wet soil sloshing around too. Just make sure you've got some fresh potting mix ready to go when your green babies arrive, because they'll want to get tucked into their new home pretty quickly!
Now, let's chat about what actually fits in our boxes. We can safely fit about 4-6 plants in one box, or if you're stocking up on supplies, one box can hold 3 bags of medium plus 1L of Growth Technology. We really don't recommend adding heavy items with your plants though - it just puts extra stress on your precious plants during transit and limits how many we can fit. If your order ends up being heavier than our standard box can handle, we'll reach out to you about additional postage fees. We're always transparent about costs, no sneaky surprises!
When Does Everything Ship Out?
Here's how our timeline works - we process and ship orders the week after you place them. So if you order on a Tuesday, your plants will get packed and sent out sometime the following week. We ship Monday through Friday (because let's be real, we all need weekends to recharge!), and we're aiming to get your order out within 4-6 business days of processing. Sometimes things take a tiny bit longer because we're a small but mighty team, and we take absolute care in making sure every single plant is packed perfectly. Like, we're talking individual attention for each plant here. We don't rush this stuff!
Once your order ships, you'll get an email with your tracking number. If you haven't received that tracking email, it just means we're still working on your order - it hasn't left us yet. Please be patient with us! We promise we're working as fast as we can while still making sure everything is done right. We pack orders in chronological order to keep things fair for everyone, so no one's getting special treatment or jumping the queue. First come, first served, that's how we roll!
The Journey to Your Doorstep
All our orders ship with Australia Post, and here's something cool - they operate 24/7! That means even if your order gets sent out on a Friday afternoon, it's still making its way to you over the weekend. The postal system doesn't sleep, and honestly, that's pretty amazing for getting plants to you quickly. You can generally expect your plants to arrive within 2-7 days after we ship them, depending on where you are in Australia. Metro areas tend to be quicker, regional spots might take the full week, but either way, your tracking number will keep you in the loop the whole time.
And here's the thing that always blows people's minds - our plants are absolute troopers. We've tested this extensively, and they can genuinely survive in their boxes for up to three weeks if needed. Obviously we don't want them sitting around that long, but life happens, mail gets delayed sometimes, and we want you to know that your plants are prepped and ready to handle whatever the postal system throws at them. While we do our best to avoid delays, occasional unforeseen circumstances may slightly impact delivery times, but rest assured, your plants are packed with extra care and are tougher than you think!
Quarantine States (WA, NT, TAS)
We currently only ship directly to non-quarantine states. Unfortunately, biosecurity restrictions make it pretty complicated to send plants to Western Australia, Northern Territory, and Tasmania. But don't worry, we've got a solution for you! If you're from a quarantine restricted state and would like to purchase plants from us, we recommend using Paradise Distributors' concierge service. They're absolute legends and can handle all the biosecurity paperwork and requirements for you. Make sure to contact them prior to purchasing so they can give you all the details and help you out: info@rareplants.net.au
Come Visit the Greenhouse! (Rockdale)
If you're local or just love the idea of picking up your order in person, we've got you covered! Greenhouse collection from our Rockdale location is available the same week you make your purchase. Our opening hours are always changing, so make sure to check booking availability on our 'Visit the Greenhouse' page before purchasing. After you've paid for your order, just head over and book a time slot that works for you. You'll get to pick up your plants AND have a wander through the greenhouse while you're here, which honestly is such a vibe. Just please wear a mask if you're feeling unwell - it's a small space and we want to keep everyone safe and healthy!
