Cotton Candy Fern - Soft, Fluffy, and Utterly Irresistible
Some plants earn their common names through a bit of creative license. The Cotton Candy Fern is not one of them. Touch those incredibly soft, fluffy fronds and you'll immediately understand why this enchanting fern is named after everyone's favourite fairground treat. It genuinely feels like you're running your fingers through spun sugar.
A cultivar of the classic Boston Fern (Nephrolepis exaltata), the Cotton Candy Fern takes everything we love about this tried and true houseplant and dials up the charm. The fronds are finer, fluffier, and more delicate than the standard Boston, with a bright chartreuse to lime-green colour that seems to glow in shaded corners. It's the kind of plant that makes visitors reach out to touch it, just to confirm it's real.
Whether cascading from a hanging basket, perched on a pedestal, or adding texture to a shaded garden spot, the Cotton Candy Fern brings a touch of whimsy and romance to any space. And unlike actual cotton candy, this one won't disappear in the rain.
The Foliage
The fronds are what set this fern apart. Unlike the broader, more substantial leaves of a typical Boston Fern, the Cotton Candy Fern produces incredibly fine, dense, and fluffy fronds that create an almost cloud-like appearance. The texture is genuinely soft to the touch, with countless tiny pinnae (leaflets) arranged along arching stems.
The colour is a fresh, bright lime-green to chartreuse, lighter and more vibrant than many other fern varieties. This luminous quality makes the Cotton Candy Fern particularly effective at brightening shaded areas where other plants might look dull.
As the plant matures, the fronds arch gracefully outward and downward, creating a full, rounded form that's perfect for elevated displays. A well-grown specimen is truly spectacular, looking like a puff of green cotton candy suspended in mid-air.
Light Requirements
Like all Boston Ferns, the Cotton Candy Fern prefers partial shade to bright indirect light. Direct sunlight, particularly afternoon sun, will scorch the delicate fronds and fade that beautiful lime-green colour. A spot with filtered light or gentle morning sun works well.
Indoors, position away from harsh south-facing windows unless filtered by sheer curtains. North-facing windows or spots a few metres from brighter windows provide ideal conditions. The plant can tolerate lower light levels better than many houseplants, making it a good choice for shadier rooms.
Rotate the pot weekly to encourage even, symmetrical growth.
Watering
Consistent moisture is the key to keeping your Cotton Candy Fern happy. Unlike many houseplants that prefer to dry out between waterings, ferns need their soil kept evenly moist at all times. Let the soil dry out and you'll quickly see crispy, brown fronds as evidence of your neglect.
Water thoroughly when the top centimetre or so of soil begins to feel dry, ensuring water drains through the pot. Empty any saucers after watering to prevent the roots sitting in water. During warmer months, you may need to water every few days; in winter, less frequently but never allow to dry completely.
When watering, aim for the soil rather than the fronds. Water sitting in the crown of the plant can encourage rot and fungal issues.
Humidity
Here's where many people struggle with ferns. The Cotton Candy Fern hails from tropical environments where humidity is high, and it appreciates similar conditions indoors. Low humidity causes browning leaf tips and crispy fronds, particularly in air-conditioned or heated homes.
Aim for humidity levels of 60% or above. Bathrooms with good light make excellent homes for ferns due to the natural humidity. You can also group plants together to create a humid microclimate, use a pebble tray filled with water beneath the pot, or run a humidifier nearby.
Misting can help but shouldn't be relied upon as your only humidity source. It also needs to be done carefully, as water trapped in the dense fronds can lead to fungal problems if air circulation is poor.
Temperature
The Cotton Candy Fern prefers moderate temperatures between 15-27°C. It doesn't appreciate extremes, whether hot or cold. Keep away from heating vents, air conditioning units, and cold drafts from windows or doors.
While it has some frost tolerance outdoors in protected positions, it's best brought inside or given protection when temperatures drop below 10°C. Sudden temperature fluctuations can cause stress, leading to leaf drop.
Potting and Soil
Use a well-draining potting mix that retains moisture without becoming waterlogged. A quality indoor potting mix with added peat or coco coir works well. Some perlite can be added to improve drainage while maintaining moisture retention.
Ferns have relatively shallow root systems, so don't pot into containers that are too large. Repot when the plant becomes root-bound, typically every one to two years, moving to a pot just one size larger.
Hanging baskets are ideal for displaying the Cotton Candy Fern's cascading fronds. Ensure baskets have good drainage and line with sphagnum moss if needed to help retain moisture.
Feeding
Feed monthly during the growing season (spring and summer) with a diluted liquid fertiliser. Growth Technology Foliage Focus at half strength works well, providing all 12 essential nutrients without risking fertiliser burn on the sensitive fronds.
Avoid over-fertilising, which can lead to salt buildup in the soil and burnt leaf edges. Reduce or stop feeding in autumn and winter when growth naturally slows.
Maintenance
Remove any brown or yellow fronds at the base to keep the plant looking tidy and to encourage new growth. Some leaf drop is normal, particularly in response to changes in environment or watering. Don't panic at a few fallen fronds, but do assess your care routine if it becomes excessive.
The Cotton Candy Fern can become quite large over time. Division is the easiest way to manage size and create new plants. Simply remove the plant from its pot and carefully separate into smaller sections, ensuring each division has healthy roots and fronds.
Air-Purifying Benefits
Boston Ferns, including the Cotton Candy variety, are excellent air purifiers. NASA research identified them as effective at removing formaldehyde and other common indoor pollutants. They also release moisture into the air through transpiration, helping to improve indoor humidity levels naturally.
Pet Safety
Great news for pet owners: the Cotton Candy Fern is non-toxic to cats and dogs. The ASPCA lists Boston Ferns (Nephrolepis exaltata) as safe for pets, making this an excellent choice for households with curious animals. While nibbling on fronds isn't encouraged (it won't do the plant any favours), an occasional taste won't harm your furry friends.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why are the fronds turning brown and crispy?
This is almost always a humidity or watering issue. Cotton Candy Ferns need consistent moisture and high humidity. Check that the soil isn't drying out between waterings, and increase humidity levels by misting, using a pebble tray, or moving to a more humid location like a bathroom. Brown tips can also indicate the plant is too close to a heat source or receiving too much direct sun.
Why is my fern dropping leaves?
Some leaf drop is normal, especially after moving to a new environment. However, excessive leaf drop usually indicates inconsistent watering (either too much or too little), low humidity, cold drafts, or temperature stress. Assess your care routine and adjust as needed.
Can I grow this fern outdoors?
Yes, in frost-free areas or during warmer months. Position in a shaded or partially shaded spot protected from direct sun and wind. Bring inside or protect when temperatures drop below 10°C.
How often should I water?
Water when the top centimetre of soil feels dry, ensuring the soil stays consistently moist but not waterlogged. During warm weather, this might be every few days; in cooler months, less frequently. Never let the soil dry out completely.
Is this fern safe for my cat or dog?
Yes. Boston Ferns (Nephrolepis exaltata), including the Cotton Candy variety, are listed as non-toxic to cats and dogs by the ASPCA. This makes it an excellent choice for pet-friendly homes.
Please Keep in Mind
The Cotton Candy Fern (Nephrolepis exaltata 'Smithii') is a Boston Fern cultivar featuring exceptionally soft, fluffy, bright lime-green fronds that truly resemble cotton candy in texture. Native to tropical regions, this fern requires consistent moisture and high humidity (60%+) to thrive. Provide partial shade to bright indirect light, avoiding direct sun which will scorch the delicate fronds. Keep soil evenly moist at all times and increase humidity through misting, pebble trays, or placement in naturally humid rooms like bathrooms. Feed monthly with diluted Growth Technology Foliage Focus during the growing season. Non-toxic to cats and dogs according to ASPCA.

LET'S TALK ABOUT HOW YOUR PLANTS GET TO YOU & HOW YOU CAN PICK THEM UP!
Alright, so here's the deal with shipping - we try our best to send all our plants potted and ready to go, but sometimes due to larger orders or when we're moving through some big changes, we'll send some plants semi-bare rooted. If you haven't come across this before, it basically means we carefully remove a bunch of the soil before packing them up. I know that might sound a bit scary if you've never ordered plants online before, but trust me, this is actually a really smart way to do it! The main reason we do this is because it creates so much more room in the box, which means we can fit way more plants in one shipment for you. More plants in one box = more green goodness arriving at your door at once! The plants honestly handle the journey better without all that heavy, wet soil sloshing around too. Just make sure you've got some fresh potting mix ready to go when your green babies arrive, because they'll want to get tucked into their new home pretty quickly!
Now, let's chat about what actually fits in our boxes. We can safely fit about 4-6 plants in one box, or if you're stocking up on supplies, one box can hold 3 bags of medium plus 1L of Growth Technology. We really don't recommend adding heavy items with your plants though - it just puts extra stress on your precious plants during transit and limits how many we can fit. If your order ends up being heavier than our standard box can handle, we'll reach out to you about additional postage fees. We're always transparent about costs, no sneaky surprises!
When Does Everything Ship Out?
Here's how our timeline works - we process and ship orders the week after you place them. So if you order on a Tuesday, your plants will get packed and sent out sometime the following week. We ship Monday through Friday (because let's be real, we all need weekends to recharge!), and we're aiming to get your order out within 4-6 business days of processing. Sometimes things take a tiny bit longer because we're a small but mighty team, and we take absolute care in making sure every single plant is packed perfectly. Like, we're talking individual attention for each plant here. We don't rush this stuff!
Once your order ships, you'll get an email with your tracking number. If you haven't received that tracking email, it just means we're still working on your order - it hasn't left us yet. Please be patient with us! We promise we're working as fast as we can while still making sure everything is done right. We pack orders in chronological order to keep things fair for everyone, so no one's getting special treatment or jumping the queue. First come, first served, that's how we roll!
The Journey to Your Doorstep
All our orders ship with Australia Post, and here's something cool - they operate 24/7! That means even if your order gets sent out on a Friday afternoon, it's still making its way to you over the weekend. The postal system doesn't sleep, and honestly, that's pretty amazing for getting plants to you quickly. You can generally expect your plants to arrive within 2-7 days after we ship them, depending on where you are in Australia. Metro areas tend to be quicker, regional spots might take the full week, but either way, your tracking number will keep you in the loop the whole time.
And here's the thing that always blows people's minds - our plants are absolute troopers. We've tested this extensively, and they can genuinely survive in their boxes for up to three weeks if needed. Obviously we don't want them sitting around that long, but life happens, mail gets delayed sometimes, and we want you to know that your plants are prepped and ready to handle whatever the postal system throws at them. While we do our best to avoid delays, occasional unforeseen circumstances may slightly impact delivery times, but rest assured, your plants are packed with extra care and are tougher than you think!
Quarantine States (WA, NT, TAS)
We currently only ship directly to non-quarantine states. Unfortunately, biosecurity restrictions make it pretty complicated to send plants to Western Australia, Northern Territory, and Tasmania. But don't worry, we've got a solution for you! If you're from a quarantine restricted state and would like to purchase plants from us, we recommend using Paradise Distributors' concierge service. They're absolute legends and can handle all the biosecurity paperwork and requirements for you. Make sure to contact them prior to purchasing so they can give you all the details and help you out: info@rareplants.net.au
