Hoya Kerrii Albomarginata - The Variegated Sweetheart
There's something undeniably romantic about a plant that grows hearts. The Hoya Kerrii has long been beloved for its perfect heart-shaped leaves, but the Albomarginata form takes things to another level entirely with its stunning cream and green variegation. Each leaf looks like a heart within a heart, the green centre framed by soft creamy-yellow margins.
This is one of the most coveted Hoyas in any collection, and it's easy to see why. Beyond the obvious charm of those variegated hearts, this plant offers everything Hoya lovers adore: thick, waxy, touchable leaves, fragrant star-shaped flowers, and that easy-going nature that makes Hoyas such rewarding plants to grow.
Native to the mountainous regions of Southeast Asia, Hoya Kerrii grows as an epiphyte, climbing up trees in its natural habitat. The Albomarginata form is a variegated cultivar that has become a true collector's favourite, often referred to by its collector's number, 84, in Australian Hoya circles.
The Foliage
Those heart-shaped leaves are genuinely impressive. Thick, fleshy, and wonderfully tactile, they have that characteristic Hoya waxiness that gives the genus its 'wax plant' nickname. Each leaf can reach up to 12cm long and 9cm wide on mature plants, making them substantial, eye-catching features.
The variegation on the Albomarginata form creates a beautiful two-tone effect. The centre of each leaf is a rich green, while the margins are painted in creamy yellow to almost white. The effect genuinely resembles a heart within a heart. The leaf stalks (petioles) often display distinctive markings too, adding to the visual interest.
This is a slow-growing Hoya, so patience is required, but each new heart that unfurls feels like a gift. The leaves retain their variegation well in proper light conditions, though leaves grown in lower light may be more green than variegated.
The Flowers
When mature and happy, Hoya Kerrii Albomarginata produces truly beautiful flowers. Unlike the standard green form which has white flowers, the Albomarginata variety produces reflexed baby pink blooms with rose to purple star-shaped centres (corona). Each flower measures around 10mm across, and they appear in clusters called umbels containing up to 25 individual blooms.
The flowers are nectar-producing, which means they can be slightly sticky, and they carry a light, pleasant fragrance. Flowering typically occurs from autumn through summer when conditions are right.
As with all Hoyas, the flower stalks (peduncles) should never be removed after blooming, as new flowers will emerge from the same points in future seasons. Higher light levels encourage flowering, so if blooms are your goal, give your plant the brightest indirect light you can.
Light Requirements
Medium to bright indirect light suits this Hoya well. It will tolerate lower light conditions, but growth will be slower and the variegation may be less pronounced. Some gentle morning sun is beneficial and can encourage flowering, but avoid harsh afternoon sun which may scorch the leaves.
If you want your Sweetheart Hoya to bloom, provide the brightest indirect light possible. Plants kept in shadier spots rarely flower, though they'll still produce those gorgeous heart-shaped leaves.
Watering
Those thick, succulent-like leaves store water, making this a wonderfully drought-tolerant plant. Allow the soil to dry out between waterings, then water thoroughly. The classic mistake with Hoyas is overwatering, so when in doubt, wait a few more days.
Reduce watering in winter when growth slows. The plant will tell you if it's thirsty: the leaves may start to feel slightly less plump or pucker at the edges. This is a plant that bounces back readily from underwatering but can struggle if kept too wet.
Use rainwater or filtered water if possible, as Hoyas can be sensitive to the lime in tap water.
Humidity and Temperature
Hoya Kerrii Albomarginata is classified as a 'cool Hoya', thriving in temperatures between 10-25°C. It will tolerate average household humidity but appreciates slightly higher levels when possible. It's not as demanding about humidity as some tropical plants, which adds to its easy-care appeal.
Protect from frost and cold drafts. During summer, the plant can be moved outdoors to a shaded position, but bring it back inside before temperatures drop.
Potting and Soil
As an epiphyte, this Hoya requires excellent drainage. A chunky, well-aerated mix is essential. Combine orchid bark with perlite, peat or coco coir, and perhaps some pumice or coarse sand. You can also use a quality cactus mix as a base and add bark for extra drainage.
Like most Hoyas, Kerrii Albomarginata actually prefers to be slightly rootbound. A snug pot encourages flowering and prevents the roots from sitting in too much moisture. Only repot when truly necessary, typically every 2-3 years or when the plant is bursting out of its container. Spring is the best time for repotting.
Feeding
This is not a heavy feeder. During the growing season (spring through summer), feed monthly with Growth Technology Foliage Focus at 3ml per litre, diluted to half strength. Reduce or stop feeding in winter.
Overfeeding can cause more harm than underfeeding with Hoyas, so err on the side of less.
A Note on Single-Leaf Plants
You may have seen single heart-shaped Hoya leaves sold in small pots, particularly around Valentine's Day. While these are charming, it's important to understand that a leaf cutting without a node attached will not grow into a vining plant. It will simply remain as a single leaf (which can survive for years looking cute, but won't develop further). The plants we sell include stem and nodes, giving you a proper growing plant that will develop into the trailing or climbing specimen these Hoyas are meant to be.
Display Options
Hoya Kerrii Albomarginata can be grown as a trailing plant in a hanging basket, allowed to cascade from a high shelf, or trained to climb a trellis, moss pole, or decorative hoop. The stems are not particularly flexible once mature, so if you want to train your plant onto a specific shape, start when the growth is young.
Heart-shaped trellises have become popular for this plant for obvious reasons, making it an even more perfect gift for plant lovers.
Perfect For
- Hoya collectors seeking a must-have variety
- Romantic gifts (Valentine's Day, anniversaries, weddings)
- Anyone who appreciates unique, heart-shaped foliage
- Pet owners wanting safe, beautiful plants
- Plant parents who sometimes forget to water
- Bright windowsills and hanging displays
Frequently Asked Questions
How is Albomarginata different from regular Hoya Kerrii?
The standard Hoya Kerrii has solid green leaves, while Albomarginata features cream/yellow margins around a green centre. The Albomarginata form also produces pink flowers rather than white, and is generally considered rarer and more collectible.
Why is my plant growing so slowly?
Hoya Kerrii is naturally a slow grower, and the variegated forms tend to grow even more slowly due to having less chlorophyll. Patience is essential with this plant. Ensure it has adequate light and isn't being overwatered, and it will reward you over time.
Will my single-leaf cutting grow into a vine?
Only if it has a piece of stem with a node attached. A leaf cutting without a node will root and survive but will never develop into a vining plant. Always ensure you're purchasing a plant with stem attached if you want it to grow.
How do I encourage flowering?
Provide bright indirect light, allow the plant to become slightly rootbound, and be patient. Hoyas typically need to be mature (2-3 years or more) before they flower. Never remove the flower stalks after blooming as new flowers emerge from the same points.
Is this plant pet safe?
Yes! Hoya Kerrii is generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs, making it a safe choice for pet-friendly households.
Please Keep in Mind
Hoya Kerrii Albomarginata is a slow-growing collector's plant that requires patience but rewards you with stunning variegated heart-shaped foliage. As a variegated form, some natural variation in the amount of variegation between leaves is normal. The cream margins are best maintained in good light conditions. This is a proper vining plant with stem and nodes, not a single-leaf novelty cutting, so it will develop and grow over time. Pet safe and drought tolerant, it's an excellent choice for beginners and collectors alike.

LET'S TALK ABOUT HOW YOUR PLANTS GET TO YOU & HOW YOU CAN PICK THEM UP!
Alright, so here's the deal with shipping - we try our best to send all our plants potted and ready to go, but sometimes due to larger orders or when we're moving through some big changes, we'll send some plants semi-bare rooted. If you haven't come across this before, it basically means we carefully remove a bunch of the soil before packing them up. I know that might sound a bit scary if you've never ordered plants online before, but trust me, this is actually a really smart way to do it! The main reason we do this is because it creates so much more room in the box, which means we can fit way more plants in one shipment for you. More plants in one box = more green goodness arriving at your door at once! The plants honestly handle the journey better without all that heavy, wet soil sloshing around too. Just make sure you've got some fresh potting mix ready to go when your green babies arrive, because they'll want to get tucked into their new home pretty quickly!
Now, let's chat about what actually fits in our boxes. We can safely fit about 4-6 plants in one box, or if you're stocking up on supplies, one box can hold 3 bags of medium plus 1L of Growth Technology. We really don't recommend adding heavy items with your plants though - it just puts extra stress on your precious plants during transit and limits how many we can fit. If your order ends up being heavier than our standard box can handle, we'll reach out to you about additional postage fees. We're always transparent about costs, no sneaky surprises!
When Does Everything Ship Out?
Here's how our timeline works - we process and ship orders the week after you place them. So if you order on a Tuesday, your plants will get packed and sent out sometime the following week. We ship Monday through Friday (because let's be real, we all need weekends to recharge!), and we're aiming to get your order out within 4-6 business days of processing. Sometimes things take a tiny bit longer because we're a small but mighty team, and we take absolute care in making sure every single plant is packed perfectly. Like, we're talking individual attention for each plant here. We don't rush this stuff!
Once your order ships, you'll get an email with your tracking number. If you haven't received that tracking email, it just means we're still working on your order - it hasn't left us yet. Please be patient with us! We promise we're working as fast as we can while still making sure everything is done right. We pack orders in chronological order to keep things fair for everyone, so no one's getting special treatment or jumping the queue. First come, first served, that's how we roll!
The Journey to Your Doorstep
All our orders ship with Australia Post, and here's something cool - they operate 24/7! That means even if your order gets sent out on a Friday afternoon, it's still making its way to you over the weekend. The postal system doesn't sleep, and honestly, that's pretty amazing for getting plants to you quickly. You can generally expect your plants to arrive within 2-7 days after we ship them, depending on where you are in Australia. Metro areas tend to be quicker, regional spots might take the full week, but either way, your tracking number will keep you in the loop the whole time.
And here's the thing that always blows people's minds - our plants are absolute troopers. We've tested this extensively, and they can genuinely survive in their boxes for up to three weeks if needed. Obviously we don't want them sitting around that long, but life happens, mail gets delayed sometimes, and we want you to know that your plants are prepped and ready to handle whatever the postal system throws at them. While we do our best to avoid delays, occasional unforeseen circumstances may slightly impact delivery times, but rest assured, your plants are packed with extra care and are tougher than you think!
Quarantine States (WA, NT, TAS)
We currently only ship directly to non-quarantine states. Unfortunately, biosecurity restrictions make it pretty complicated to send plants to Western Australia, Northern Territory, and Tasmania. But don't worry, we've got a solution for you! If you're from a quarantine restricted state and would like to purchase plants from us, we recommend using Paradise Distributors' concierge service. They're absolute legends and can handle all the biosecurity paperwork and requirements for you. Make sure to contact them prior to purchasing so they can give you all the details and help you out: info@rareplants.net.au
