Lepismium Houlletianum - The Cascading Snowdrop Cactus
Forget everything you think you know about cacti. The Lepismium Houlletianum is a jungle dweller, not a desert survivor. Native to the rainforests of Brazil and Argentina, this epiphytic cactus grows high in the tree canopy, sending long, graceful stems cascading down through the humid forest air. It's a completely different world from the sun-baked landscapes most people associate with cacti.
Often called the Snowdrop Cactus for its charming bell-shaped flowers that hang like little snowdrops from the stem edges, this is one of the most reliable flowering jungle cacti you can grow. Under good conditions, it will produce masses of creamy-white to pale yellow blooms almost year-round, followed by small red or black berries. It's a plant that rewards you with beauty without demanding much in return.
The cascading habit makes this an absolutely stunning specimen in a hanging basket. The long, flat, leaf-like stems with their distinctively serrated edges can reach over a metre in length, creating a dramatic waterfall of green foliage. Some growers call it the Seaweed Cactus for this flowing, ribbon-like appearance.
The Foliage
The stems of Lepismium Houlletianum are quite unlike typical cacti. They're flat and leaf-like, up to 20cm long per segment and around 3cm wide, with a lovely pale fresh green colour. The margins have distinctive serrated or toothed edges that give the plant texture and visual interest.
New growth emerges from cylindrical primary stems, which then produce these flattened secondary segments. The overall effect is lush, architectural, and utterly captivating. In brighter light conditions or when slightly stressed, the stems can develop beautiful reddish-pink tones, adding another dimension to the display.
While the stems may look delicate, they're actually quite robust, with a leathery texture that hints at the plant's succulent nature. They branch freely, creating a full, dense specimen over time.
The Flowers
One of the best things about Lepismium Houlletianum is how reliably it flowers. The charming bell-shaped blooms appear along the edges of the stems, emerging from the areoles (the small bumps where spines would be on other cacti). They're typically creamy-white with a faint yellow tinge, sometimes with reddish bases to the stamens that give the flower centre a coloured throat.
Flowers are 1.5-2cm long and nod gently, fully justifying the "snowdrop" name. Under good growing conditions, this plant can bloom almost continuously throughout the year. After flowering, small round fruits may develop, ripening to red or black and containing tiny black seeds.
Light Requirements
As an understorey plant from the rainforest, Lepismium Houlletianum doesn't need or want intense direct sunlight. Bright indirect light is ideal, or a position with gentle morning sun and afternoon shade. Avoid harsh midday and afternoon sun, which can scorch the stems and cause yellowing or bleaching.
That said, if your plant isn't flowering, it may need a bit more light. The balance is to provide enough brightness to encourage blooming without burning the foliage. An east-facing window or a position a metre or so back from a brighter window works well.
In brighter light, you may notice the stems developing attractive reddish tones. This sun-stressing is not harmful and adds to the plant's visual appeal.
Watering
This is where Lepismium Houlletianum differs from desert cacti. While it's still drought-tolerant, it needs more regular watering than its spiny desert cousins. Allow the soil to dry slightly between waterings, but don't leave it bone dry for extended periods.
Water thoroughly when the top few centimetres of soil are dry, allowing excess water to drain completely. Never let the plant sit in standing water, as this can quickly lead to root rot. Reduce watering in winter when growth slows.
Overwatering is the most common cause of problems. If you notice stems becoming soft, mushy, or translucent, you've likely been too generous with water. Let the plant dry out and check the roots for rot.
Humidity
Coming from humid rainforests, this plant appreciates higher humidity levels. Aim for 50% or above for best growth. In dry indoor environments, particularly with heating or air conditioning, the plant may struggle.
Boost humidity by grouping plants together, placing on a pebble tray with water, using a humidifier, or positioning in naturally humid rooms like bathrooms with good light. Occasional misting is beneficial, especially in drier conditions.
Potting and Soil
As an epiphyte, Lepismium Houlletianum needs a very different growing medium from regular cacti. Use a light, airy, well-draining mix similar to what you'd use for orchids or bromeliads. A blend of orchid bark, perlite, and peat or coco coir works well. Standard potting mix is fine as long as you add plenty of drainage material.
The pH should be slightly acidic, around 5.5-6.5. Repot every 2-3 years in spring, or when the plant outgrows its container.
Feeding
Feed with Growth Technology Foliage Focus at 3ml per litre monthly during the growing season (spring through autumn). This plant isn't a heavy feeder, so don't overdo it. Earthworm castings or other organic amendments can also be beneficial.
Reduce or stop feeding in winter when growth naturally slows.
Display Options
Hanging baskets are the natural choice for Lepismium Houlletianum, allowing those beautiful cascading stems to flow freely. It also looks stunning mounted on cork or driftwood like an orchid, displayed on a high shelf where it can trail, or in a macrame hanger.
The architectural form and flowing habit make this a statement piece in any collection. It pairs beautifully with other jungle cacti like Rhipsalis and epiphytic orchids.
Perfect For
- Hanging basket displays
- Plant lovers who want flowering cacti without desert conditions
- Pet owners seeking safe, interesting plants
- Those who appreciate architectural, trailing foliage
- Bathrooms and humid spaces with good light
- Anyone who has struggled with traditional desert cacti
Frequently Asked Questions
Is this the same as Rhipsalis?
Lepismium and Rhipsalis are closely related and often confused or sold interchangeably. Lepismium Houlletianum has been classified as both at different times. The care requirements are essentially the same for both genera, so don't worry too much about the exact taxonomy.
Why isn't my plant flowering?
Insufficient light is the most common reason for lack of flowers. Try moving your plant to a brighter position with more indirect light. Also ensure you're not overwatering and that the plant is receiving regular feeding during the growing season.
Why are my stems turning red?
This is a natural response to brighter light and isn't harmful. Many growers actually find the reddish tones attractive. If you prefer greener foliage, simply move the plant to a shadier position.
How do I propagate this plant?
Stem cuttings are the easiest method. Take a healthy stem segment in spring or summer, allow it to callus over for a few days, then plant in well-draining mix. Keep lightly moist until roots establish.
Is this plant safe for my pets?
Yes! Lepismium Houlletianum is listed as non-toxic by the ASPCA, making it safe for households with cats and dogs.
Please Keep in Mind
Lepismium Houlletianum is a jungle cactus, not a desert cactus, so it needs different care from the spiny specimens most people picture when they think of cacti. It appreciates humidity, dislikes intense direct sun, and needs more regular watering than desert species. The cascading stems are somewhat fragile when young but become more robust as they mature. This plant is pet safe, making it an excellent choice for households with curious cats and dogs.

LET'S TALK ABOUT HOW YOUR PLANTS GET TO YOU & HOW YOU CAN PICK THEM UP!
Alright, so here's the deal with shipping - we try our best to send all our plants potted and ready to go, but sometimes due to larger orders or when we're moving through some big changes, we'll send some plants semi-bare rooted. If you haven't come across this before, it basically means we carefully remove a bunch of the soil before packing them up. I know that might sound a bit scary if you've never ordered plants online before, but trust me, this is actually a really smart way to do it! The main reason we do this is because it creates so much more room in the box, which means we can fit way more plants in one shipment for you. More plants in one box = more green goodness arriving at your door at once! The plants honestly handle the journey better without all that heavy, wet soil sloshing around too. Just make sure you've got some fresh potting mix ready to go when your green babies arrive, because they'll want to get tucked into their new home pretty quickly!
Now, let's chat about what actually fits in our boxes. We can safely fit about 4-6 plants in one box, or if you're stocking up on supplies, one box can hold 3 bags of medium plus 1L of Growth Technology. We really don't recommend adding heavy items with your plants though - it just puts extra stress on your precious plants during transit and limits how many we can fit. If your order ends up being heavier than our standard box can handle, we'll reach out to you about additional postage fees. We're always transparent about costs, no sneaky surprises!
When Does Everything Ship Out?
Here's how our timeline works - we process and ship orders the week after you place them. So if you order on a Tuesday, your plants will get packed and sent out sometime the following week. We ship Monday through Friday (because let's be real, we all need weekends to recharge!), and we're aiming to get your order out within 4-6 business days of processing. Sometimes things take a tiny bit longer because we're a small but mighty team, and we take absolute care in making sure every single plant is packed perfectly. Like, we're talking individual attention for each plant here. We don't rush this stuff!
Once your order ships, you'll get an email with your tracking number. If you haven't received that tracking email, it just means we're still working on your order - it hasn't left us yet. Please be patient with us! We promise we're working as fast as we can while still making sure everything is done right. We pack orders in chronological order to keep things fair for everyone, so no one's getting special treatment or jumping the queue. First come, first served, that's how we roll!
The Journey to Your Doorstep
All our orders ship with Australia Post, and here's something cool - they operate 24/7! That means even if your order gets sent out on a Friday afternoon, it's still making its way to you over the weekend. The postal system doesn't sleep, and honestly, that's pretty amazing for getting plants to you quickly. You can generally expect your plants to arrive within 2-7 days after we ship them, depending on where you are in Australia. Metro areas tend to be quicker, regional spots might take the full week, but either way, your tracking number will keep you in the loop the whole time.
And here's the thing that always blows people's minds - our plants are absolute troopers. We've tested this extensively, and they can genuinely survive in their boxes for up to three weeks if needed. Obviously we don't want them sitting around that long, but life happens, mail gets delayed sometimes, and we want you to know that your plants are prepped and ready to handle whatever the postal system throws at them. While we do our best to avoid delays, occasional unforeseen circumstances may slightly impact delivery times, but rest assured, your plants are packed with extra care and are tougher than you think!
Quarantine States (WA, NT, TAS)
We currently only ship directly to non-quarantine states. Unfortunately, biosecurity restrictions make it pretty complicated to send plants to Western Australia, Northern Territory, and Tasmania. But don't worry, we've got a solution for you! If you're from a quarantine restricted state and would like to purchase plants from us, we recommend using Paradise Distributors' concierge service. They're absolute legends and can handle all the biosecurity paperwork and requirements for you. Make sure to contact them prior to purchasing so they can give you all the details and help you out: info@rareplants.net.au
