Dischidia Million Hearts - The Sweetheart of Trailing Plants
There's a reason this charming little plant is called Million Hearts. One look at those densely packed, perfectly heart-shaped leaves trailing down slender stems and you'll understand immediately. Dischidia Ruscifolia is one of those plants that makes everyone smile, combining adorable good looks with genuinely easy care.
Native to the Philippines where it grows as an epiphyte clinging to tree branches and cliff faces, the Million Hearts has become increasingly popular among houseplant enthusiasts who appreciate its graceful trailing habit and forgiving nature. It's closely related to Hoya, sharing that same resilient character that makes both genera such rewarding plants to grow.
Whether cascading from a hanging basket, trailing from a shelf, or even mounted on bark to mimic its natural habitat, the Million Hearts brings a delicate, romantic touch to any indoor space. And as a bonus, it produces tiny fragrant white flowers throughout the year once established.
The Foliage
The leaves are the star attraction here. Each one is a perfect little succulent heart, less than a centimetre across, densely arranged in pairs along slender green stems. The leaves are thick, fleshy, and slightly stiff, with a glossy green surface that catches the light beautifully.
When grown in brighter conditions, the leaves may develop an attractive reddish tinge, adding extra visual interest. The stems themselves are slim but quite tough, repeatedly branching from near the base to create a full, cascading effect as the plant matures.
Over time, stems can reach a metre or more in length, and the plant will often root at the tips where they touch a surface, continuing to grow and creating even more dense, heart-covered trails.
The Flowers
While the foliage is the main attraction, established Million Hearts plants produce tiny white flowers that appear at the leaf nodes throughout the year. The flowers are small but fragrant, with a sweet scent that can be surprisingly noticeable, especially when the plant is flowering prolifically.
The blooms remain on the plant for extended periods, adding a subtle decorative element to the cascading stems. Flowering is more likely when the plant is kept in bright conditions with good humidity.
Light Requirements
Million Hearts thrives in bright, indirect light. A spot near an east or west-facing window works well, providing good light without the harsh intensity of direct afternoon sun. The plant can tolerate some morning sun, but prolonged direct exposure, particularly in summer, can scorch the delicate leaves.
In lower light conditions, the plant will survive but may grow more slowly and produce fewer flowers. If you notice the leaves losing their compact, plump appearance or the stems becoming leggy, it's a sign the plant needs more light.
Watering
Here's where the Million Hearts differs from many houseplants. As an epiphyte that naturally grows attached to trees with its roots exposed to air, it absolutely hates sitting in wet soil. Overwatering is the fastest way to kill this plant.
Allow the potting medium to dry out almost completely between waterings, then water thoroughly. In its natural habitat, this plant absorbs much of its moisture from humidity in the air, so it's quite drought-tolerant. During winter, reduce watering even further.
Signs of overwatering include yellowing leaves that fall off and soft, mushy stems. If you're unsure whether to water, wait another few days. This plant will forgive you for underwatering far more readily than for overdoing it.
Potting and Soil
Standard potting mix is not suitable for Million Hearts. As an epiphyte, it needs a very loose, fast-draining medium that allows plenty of air circulation around the roots. Think of how orchids are grown, and you're on the right track.
An orchid bark mix works well, as does coco husk chips or a blend of bark, perlite, and a small amount of sphagnum moss. The goal is a medium that drains almost instantly and never stays waterlogged. Good drainage holes in the pot are essential.
Alternatively, you can mount the plant on bark or driftwood, misting regularly to provide moisture. This mimics its natural epiphytic growth habit and can create a stunning display.
Humidity and Temperature
While Million Hearts appreciates humidity, it's surprisingly adaptable to average household conditions. It will thrive with moderate humidity of 50-55% or higher, but won't sulk in drier environments as long as watering is appropriate.
Grouping with other plants, occasional misting, or placing near a humidifier all help create favourable conditions. Good air circulation is important to prevent fungal issues, especially in humid environments.
Temperature-wise, keep between 18-30°C for best growth. Protect from cold drafts and avoid temperatures below 10°C. This is a tropical plant that prefers warmth, particularly in winter when cooler conditions combined with dampness can lead to fungal problems.
Feeding
Million Hearts is not a heavy feeder. Apply a diluted liquid fertiliser monthly during the growing season (spring and summer), using Growth Technology Foliage Focus at half the recommended strength. Dischidia are sensitive to fertiliser salts, so less is definitely more.
Stop feeding in autumn and winter when growth naturally slows. Overfertilising can damage the delicate root system, so err on the side of caution.
Propagation
One of the great joys of Million Hearts is how easily it propagates. Simply take stem cuttings with several leaf nodes, allow the cut end to dry for a day or two, then place in water or moist sphagnum moss until roots develop.
You can also lay cuttings on top of moist potting medium and lightly press the nodes into the surface. Keep warm and lightly moist until roots establish. Using Clonex Clone Solution can help encourage strong root development.
The plant naturally roots at stem tips where they contact a surface, so you may find new plants forming without any effort on your part.
Pet Safety Note
Dischidia Ruscifolia contains a milky latex sap in its stems and leaves that can cause irritation. While not considered severely toxic, the sap may cause vomiting, diarrhoea, or mouth irritation if ingested by pets, and can irritate skin on contact. Keep out of reach of curious cats, dogs, and children. If ingestion occurs, monitor for symptoms and contact your vet if concerned.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why are the leaves turning yellow and falling off?
This is almost always a sign of overwatering. Dischidia are epiphytes with delicate root systems that rot quickly in wet conditions. Allow the potting medium to dry out almost completely between waterings and ensure your pot has excellent drainage. Switch to a more porous potting mix if necessary.
Why is my plant not growing?
Check your light levels first. Million Hearts needs bright indirect light to grow well. Low light will result in slow or no growth. Also ensure you're not overwatering, as stressed roots can't support new growth. In winter, slower growth is normal.
Can I grow this plant in regular potting soil?
We strongly recommend against it. As an epiphyte, Million Hearts needs a very loose, fast-draining medium like orchid bark or coco husk chips. Standard potting soil holds too much moisture and doesn't provide adequate air circulation for the roots.
Why are the leaves turning red?
A reddish tinge on the leaves typically indicates the plant is receiving bright light. This is a normal stress response and not harmful. If you prefer greener leaves, move the plant to slightly lower light conditions.
Is Million Hearts related to Hoya?
Yes, Dischidia and Hoya are sister genera in the Apocynaceae family. They share similar care requirements and growth habits, both being epiphytic vines from tropical Asia. If you enjoy one, you'll likely love the other.
Please Keep in Mind
Dischidia Ruscifolia, commonly known as Million Hearts, is an epiphytic vine native to the Philippines featuring densely packed heart-shaped succulent leaves on trailing stems that can reach one metre or more. Unlike typical houseplants, this epiphyte requires very well-draining potting medium such as orchid bark or coco husk chips and absolutely must not be overwatered as root rot occurs quickly in wet conditions. Provide bright indirect light, warmth, and moderate humidity for best results. Feed sparingly with diluted Growth Technology Foliage Focus during the growing season. Contains milky sap that may cause irritation if ingested or contacted, so keep away from pets and children.

LET'S TALK ABOUT HOW YOUR PLANTS GET TO YOU & HOW YOU CAN PICK THEM UP!
Alright, so here's the deal with shipping - we try our best to send all our plants potted and ready to go, but sometimes due to larger orders or when we're moving through some big changes, we'll send some plants semi-bare rooted. If you haven't come across this before, it basically means we carefully remove a bunch of the soil before packing them up. I know that might sound a bit scary if you've never ordered plants online before, but trust me, this is actually a really smart way to do it! The main reason we do this is because it creates so much more room in the box, which means we can fit way more plants in one shipment for you. More plants in one box = more green goodness arriving at your door at once! The plants honestly handle the journey better without all that heavy, wet soil sloshing around too. Just make sure you've got some fresh potting mix ready to go when your green babies arrive, because they'll want to get tucked into their new home pretty quickly!
Now, let's chat about what actually fits in our boxes. We can safely fit about 4-6 plants in one box, or if you're stocking up on supplies, one box can hold 3 bags of medium plus 1L of Growth Technology. We really don't recommend adding heavy items with your plants though - it just puts extra stress on your precious plants during transit and limits how many we can fit. If your order ends up being heavier than our standard box can handle, we'll reach out to you about additional postage fees. We're always transparent about costs, no sneaky surprises!
When Does Everything Ship Out?
Here's how our timeline works - we process and ship orders the week after you place them. So if you order on a Tuesday, your plants will get packed and sent out sometime the following week. We ship Monday through Friday (because let's be real, we all need weekends to recharge!), and we're aiming to get your order out within 4-6 business days of processing. Sometimes things take a tiny bit longer because we're a small but mighty team, and we take absolute care in making sure every single plant is packed perfectly. Like, we're talking individual attention for each plant here. We don't rush this stuff!
Once your order ships, you'll get an email with your tracking number. If you haven't received that tracking email, it just means we're still working on your order - it hasn't left us yet. Please be patient with us! We promise we're working as fast as we can while still making sure everything is done right. We pack orders in chronological order to keep things fair for everyone, so no one's getting special treatment or jumping the queue. First come, first served, that's how we roll!
The Journey to Your Doorstep
All our orders ship with Australia Post, and here's something cool - they operate 24/7! That means even if your order gets sent out on a Friday afternoon, it's still making its way to you over the weekend. The postal system doesn't sleep, and honestly, that's pretty amazing for getting plants to you quickly. You can generally expect your plants to arrive within 2-7 days after we ship them, depending on where you are in Australia. Metro areas tend to be quicker, regional spots might take the full week, but either way, your tracking number will keep you in the loop the whole time.
And here's the thing that always blows people's minds - our plants are absolute troopers. We've tested this extensively, and they can genuinely survive in their boxes for up to three weeks if needed. Obviously we don't want them sitting around that long, but life happens, mail gets delayed sometimes, and we want you to know that your plants are prepped and ready to handle whatever the postal system throws at them. While we do our best to avoid delays, occasional unforeseen circumstances may slightly impact delivery times, but rest assured, your plants are packed with extra care and are tougher than you think!
Quarantine States (WA, NT, TAS)
We currently only ship directly to non-quarantine states. Unfortunately, biosecurity restrictions make it pretty complicated to send plants to Western Australia, Northern Territory, and Tasmania. But don't worry, we've got a solution for you! If you're from a quarantine restricted state and would like to purchase plants from us, we recommend using Paradise Distributors' concierge service. They're absolute legends and can handle all the biosecurity paperwork and requirements for you. Make sure to contact them prior to purchasing so they can give you all the details and help you out: info@rareplants.net.au
