Monstera Obliqua Peru - The Holy Grail of Monstera
If there's one plant that has achieved almost mythical status among collectors, it's the Monstera Obliqua Peru. Those paper-thin leaves with extreme fenestrations, where the holes make up more leaf surface than actual leaf tissue, create an ethereal, lace-like appearance that's unlike anything else in the plant world.
Native to the rainforests of Peru, this remarkable climbing aroid has captivated plant enthusiasts worldwide. The Peru form is the most sought-after variety, prized for its dramatic fenestrations that can consume up to 90% of the leaf surface. Each leaf looks almost skeletal, with delicate tissue stretched between large, irregular holes that give it an impossibly intricate appearance.
This is a plant for serious collectors. While prices have become more accessible in recent years, Monstera Obliqua Peru still commands respect both for its beauty and its care requirements. If you're ready to add this legendary plant to your collection, the rewards are extraordinary.
Not Your Average Monstera
Monstera Obliqua Peru is frequently confused with Monstera adansonii, but there are clear differences once you know what to look for. Obliqua leaves are paper-thin and almost translucent, while adansonii leaves are noticeably thicker and sturdier. The fenestrations in obliqua are far more extreme, with holes taking up 70-90% of the leaf, compared to around 50% maximum in adansonii.
Perhaps the most telling difference is that obliqua produces stolons (runners), which are long stems that grow along surfaces and can develop new plants at nodes. This is a distinctive feature you won't see in adansonii.
Light Requirements
Those delicate, paper-thin leaves are highly susceptible to damage from direct light. Position your Obliqua Peru in medium to low indirect light. An east-facing window or a position well back from brighter windows works well.
Avoid direct sunlight entirely. Even short exposure can scorch and damage the leaves irreversibly. Bright indirect light can also cause yellowing if the exposure is prolonged. Think of the dappled light of the rainforest understorey, and you'll understand what this plant needs.
That said, too little light will slow growth even further and reduce fenestration development. Finding the right balance is key.
Watering
Unlike some Monstera that prefer to dry out between waterings, Obliqua Peru likes to stay consistently moist. Allow just the top centimetre or so of soil to dry before watering again. The soil should feel slightly damp but never waterlogged.
Good drainage is essential. While the plant likes moisture, sitting in water will quickly lead to root rot. Use a pot with drainage holes and a chunky, well-draining mix that holds moisture without becoming soggy.
Humidity - The Critical Factor
This is where Monstera Obliqua Peru differs most from easier houseplants. High humidity is not optional; it's essential. The plant thrives at 70-85% humidity, and while it can adapt to slightly lower levels around 60%, anything below this will cause problems.
Low humidity causes the delicate leaf edges to dry out and brown. In severe cases, leaves can become crispy and fail to develop properly. Many growers keep their Obliqua Peru in terrariums, greenhouse cabinets, or near humidifiers to maintain adequate moisture in the air.
If you're transitioning a plant from high humidity conditions, do so gradually over several weeks to allow it to acclimatise.
Temperature
Keep temperatures warm and stable between 18-26°C. This tropical plant doesn't tolerate cold and should never be exposed to temperatures below 15°C. Avoid cold draughts, air conditioning vents, and placement near cold windows in winter.
Potting Medium
A well-draining aroid mix high in organic matter is ideal. The plant's natural habitat involves climbing trees where its roots access decomposing organic material, so a mix of orchid bark, perlite, sphagnum moss, and coco coir works well.
Our Ultimate Aroid Mix provides excellent drainage while retaining the moisture this plant appreciates.
Climbing and Growth
Monstera Obliqua Peru is a natural climber, and providing support encourages larger leaves with more impressive fenestrations. A moss pole or Grow Vertical Propstick gives the aerial roots something to grip.
Without climbing support, the plant may produce stolons (runners) instead. These long stems without leaves are a natural feature of obliqua and can be left to develop or trimmed for propagation.
Be patient with growth. This is one of the slowest-growing Monstera species, typically producing only 2-6 new leaves per year even under ideal conditions.
Feeding
Feed lightly with Growth Technology Foliage Focus at 3ml per litre during the growing season. This plant is not a heavy feeder, and its slow growth means it doesn't require frequent fertilising. Once a month during spring and summer is sufficient.
Use Growth Technology Rootzone at 0.5ml per litre every 4 weeks to support root health.
Perfect For
- Serious plant collectors
- Those with terrariums or greenhouse cabinets
- Growers who can provide consistent high humidity
- Anyone seeking a true statement collector's plant
- Monstera enthusiasts wanting the ultimate species
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know if my plant is really Monstera obliqua?
True obliqua has paper-thin leaves (you can almost see light through them), extreme fenestrations covering 70-90% of the leaf surface, and produces stolons (runners). The leaves should feel delicate and fragile compared to the thicker, sturdier leaves of adansonii. If your plant has thick leaves with smaller holes, it's likely adansonii.
Why is my Obliqua Peru growing so slowly?
Slow growth is completely normal for this species. Even under perfect conditions, expect only a few new leaves per year. If growth has completely stalled, check humidity levels (most common issue), light, and temperature. Ensure the plant isn't stressed from recent repotting or changes in environment.
Can I grow this without a terrarium?
Yes, but you'll need to provide consistent humidity through other means. A quality humidifier running near the plant, grouping with other humidity-loving plants, or placement in a naturally humid room like a bright bathroom can work. Monitor the leaf edges for signs of humidity stress.
What are the runners my plant is producing?
These stolons are normal and actually help confirm you have a true obliqua. They're long stems that can develop new growth points at nodes. You can guide them onto a support, allow them to trail, or cut them for propagation.
Is this the same as Monstera Peru?
No. Monstera Peru (karstenianum) is a completely different species with thick, puckered, emerald green leaves and no fenestrations. "Monstera Obliqua Peru" refers to the Peruvian form of Monstera obliqua, which has the extreme fenestrations this plant is famous for.
Please Keep in Mind
Monstera Obliqua Peru requires higher humidity than most houseplants. If you cannot provide humidity levels of 60% or above consistently, this plant may struggle in your care. Consider a terrarium, greenhouse cabinet, or dedicated humidifier setup before purchasing. Each plant is unique. The amount and pattern of fenestrations varies between plants and leaves. Younger leaves typically show less fenestration than mature foliage. This is a slow-growing species. Patience is essential. Healthy growth, even if slow, is a sign your plant is thriving.
Monstera Obliqua is toxic to pets and humans if ingested. The sap can also cause skin irritation. Keep out of reach of curious pets and children, and wear gloves when pruning.

LET'S TALK ABOUT HOW YOUR PLANTS GET TO YOU & HOW YOU CAN PICK THEM UP!
Alright, so here's the deal with shipping - we try our best to send all our plants potted and ready to go, but sometimes due to larger orders or when we're moving through some big changes, we'll send some plants semi-bare rooted. If you haven't come across this before, it basically means we carefully remove a bunch of the soil before packing them up. I know that might sound a bit scary if you've never ordered plants online before, but trust me, this is actually a really smart way to do it! The main reason we do this is because it creates so much more room in the box, which means we can fit way more plants in one shipment for you. More plants in one box = more green goodness arriving at your door at once! The plants honestly handle the journey better without all that heavy, wet soil sloshing around too. Just make sure you've got some fresh potting mix ready to go when your green babies arrive, because they'll want to get tucked into their new home pretty quickly!
Now, let's chat about what actually fits in our boxes. We can safely fit about 4-6 plants in one box, or if you're stocking up on supplies, one box can hold 3 bags of medium plus 1L of Growth Technology. We really don't recommend adding heavy items with your plants though - it just puts extra stress on your precious plants during transit and limits how many we can fit. If your order ends up being heavier than our standard box can handle, we'll reach out to you about additional postage fees. We're always transparent about costs, no sneaky surprises!
When Does Everything Ship Out?
Here's how our timeline works - we process and ship orders the week after you place them. So if you order on a Tuesday, your plants will get packed and sent out sometime the following week. We ship Monday through Friday (because let's be real, we all need weekends to recharge!), and we're aiming to get your order out within 4-6 business days of processing. Sometimes things take a tiny bit longer because we're a small but mighty team, and we take absolute care in making sure every single plant is packed perfectly. Like, we're talking individual attention for each plant here. We don't rush this stuff!
Once your order ships, you'll get an email with your tracking number. If you haven't received that tracking email, it just means we're still working on your order - it hasn't left us yet. Please be patient with us! We promise we're working as fast as we can while still making sure everything is done right. We pack orders in chronological order to keep things fair for everyone, so no one's getting special treatment or jumping the queue. First come, first served, that's how we roll!
The Journey to Your Doorstep
All our orders ship with Australia Post, and here's something cool - they operate 24/7! That means even if your order gets sent out on a Friday afternoon, it's still making its way to you over the weekend. The postal system doesn't sleep, and honestly, that's pretty amazing for getting plants to you quickly. You can generally expect your plants to arrive within 2-7 days after we ship them, depending on where you are in Australia. Metro areas tend to be quicker, regional spots might take the full week, but either way, your tracking number will keep you in the loop the whole time.
And here's the thing that always blows people's minds - our plants are absolute troopers. We've tested this extensively, and they can genuinely survive in their boxes for up to three weeks if needed. Obviously we don't want them sitting around that long, but life happens, mail gets delayed sometimes, and we want you to know that your plants are prepped and ready to handle whatever the postal system throws at them. While we do our best to avoid delays, occasional unforeseen circumstances may slightly impact delivery times, but rest assured, your plants are packed with extra care and are tougher than you think!
Quarantine States (WA, NT, TAS)
We currently only ship directly to non-quarantine states. Unfortunately, biosecurity restrictions make it pretty complicated to send plants to Western Australia, Northern Territory, and Tasmania. But don't worry, we've got a solution for you! If you're from a quarantine restricted state and would like to purchase plants from us, we recommend using Paradise Distributors' concierge service. They're absolute legends and can handle all the biosecurity paperwork and requirements for you. Make sure to contact them prior to purchasing so they can give you all the details and help you out: info@rareplants.net.au
